A Decade of Trust: Helen and Hong’s Story

A Decade of Trust: Helen and Hong’s Story

Mar 24, 2026

For 10 years, Helen and her support worker Hong have shared a partnership built on trust, consistency and genuine connection through Alliance Community. What began as Helen searching for the right support worker has grown into a relationship that feels like family.

Finding the Right Fit

When Helen first began looking for support, she had clear expectations. “I was looking for someone who was reliable, honest, and someone who would listen and learn easily,” she says.

One of the first things that stood out about Hong was her willingness to learn Helen’s favourite Greek dishes, like moussaka and pumpkin pie. “Hong was open to learning my Greek style of cooking. She is very adaptable and willing to learn. I loved that about Hong.”

That willingness to understand Helen’s preferences set the foundation for a partnership that has lasted a decade.

The Power of Consistency

Over the years, consistent support has made a major difference in Helen’s day to day life. “I like it, as Hong just knows what to do. She walks in and starts on jobs that I can’t do for myself anymore.”

For Helen, knowing exactly who will arrive each day brings a sense of calm. “I don’t have anxiety about not knowing who is going to turn up. Hong just does it.”

That reliability has created a bond that goes beyond routine. “Hong is like family to me. And apparently, I’m like family to Hong. That has made a big difference in my life.”

Standing Side by Side Through Change

During the past 10 years, Helen has moved several times, and having Hong by her side has eased the stress of each transition. “It can be quite stressful when you move. Hong was a great help. She helped me pack and sort things out.”

Helen admits she can be “a bit of a hoarder”, but Hong supported her to decide what to keep, donate or let go. “Sometimes she can seem a little bit bossy, but she is always helping me. And that makes me so happy. I love my new unit.”

Most days start at 8am with help preparing breakfast, showering and getting ready for the day. After that, Helen might catch public transport, meet a friend for lunch, go shopping or visit the hairdresser.

She enjoys staying active in the community, spending time with family, and going to shows at the theatre.

Some days are quiet but equally enjoyable. “Sometimes we just stay home and they pamper me and paint my nails bright red,” she says.

The mix of practical support and shared enjoyment makes each day fulfilling.

More Than a Job

For Hong, working with Helen has never felt like an obligation. “When you work with someone for such a long time, you do become friends. Then it doesn’t really feel like work.”

Even when Helen moved further away, Hong chose to continue supporting her. “We have a great routine and I enjoy the work. I plan to be around for another 10 years if she will have me!”

Both agree that communication and mutual respect keep their partnership strong. “Working with Helen is teamwork,” Hong says. “We may not always agree, but we’ve learnt to compromise. And we always have fun and a laugh.”

Hong is also quick to notice any changes in Helen’s health. “Life is always changing, and so is my health. Hong communicates so well and seems to know when I might need to see my GP,” Helen says.

“As soon as I see signs or symptoms, we act straight away,” Hong adds. “We love Helen and we don’t want her to get sick.”

A Relationship Built to Last

After 10 years, their message is clear: consistency, trust and genuine connection matter. “It doesn’t feel like work,” they say. “It just feels like hanging out with family.”

Helen’s advice for others seeking support is simple. “Having staff who are kind, compassionate and have a good sense of humour is just as important as being highly trained.”

Hong agrees. “If you are well matched with your client and you get on well, the job is so much more enjoyable. Mutual respect is the key.”
