Say hi to Gabriela! 

From a very young age, Gabriela always dreamed of helping others and she wanted to make the world a better place. She was an environmental scientist and worked towards understanding how to preserve the environment for the future generations. However, she felt something was missing as she was mainly working in a laboratory.

She moved to Sydney with her boyfriend, Peter, when she was 26 – they wanted to gain new experiences together, but everything changed when he suffered a spinal cord injury and became quadriplegic. The journey was not easy, and Gabriela realised her mission is to help people with disabilities. She applied for a role as a support worker with Alliance Community. “I could see that people can live a better life when they are treated with love, care, and respect.”

Since her first day with Alliance Community, Gabriela has built and fostered amazing rapport with clients, even though she only provides domestic assistance and social support for elderly clients. Although life was incredible in Sydney, Gabriela and her boyfriend wanted to settle down and think about their future – that was when they decided to move to Adelaide. Her transition from Sydney to Adelaide was easy, and her new team and clients welcomed her warmly.

Gabriela worked as a support worker for four unforgettable years. She said: “Through supporting my clients, I learned a lot about different cultures, history, religions, recipes. Moreover, that feeling that you made someone’s life easier is priceless.” She was recently promoted to a new role and as a Support and Care Coordinator, Gabriela can reach and help more people to get the right support and create precious partnerships with support workers.
